View Full Version : Username/Password Popup windows?

Starting last night I've been getting popup windows asking for user login verification???

I usually come to the site at ohio-riders.net but just now I couldn't get on that way, had to go the .com route.
Kept getting server application errors everytime I closed the popup that kept opening.

What gives??

I was getting it last night, but it was sporadic.
Last night I was using Firefox and getting the window. Right now I'm using IE with no issues.

What browsers are you guys using?

Firefox for me

I've had it at random with IE8.

I posted about it in the smilies not working thread, since it seems to be related to some of the stuff talked about there.

Now that's odd. There is no code that could pop up asking for a login.

Going to these links should automatically redirect to www.ohio-riders.com:
www.ohioriders.net
www.ohio-riders.net

Does that work?

There should definitely not be any popups asking for your username and password. I'm 99% sure there is no popup code in this style for vBulletin. I did the conversion for this style for 3.6 to 3.7 and 3.8. I've been though this code line by line, and I can't remember anything that would cause a popup asking for login info.

No pop-ups here, tried both .net addresses through Chrome, FF, and IE on both Linux and Windows 7.

Before you call bs, I run ies4linux to get IE on Linux - needed for website compatibility testing.

Not sure what the others are seeing.

EDIT: Also working properly from Crackberry browser to hyphen.net and nohyphen.net

They were the windows login type popup. Like the ones that you get with peer to peer networking, to access password protected resources on another PC.

It was happening to me w/ Firefox going to ohio-riders.net. I don't know what web server you are using but I know with IIS, for example, if you try to access something you don't have file permissions to, it will ask for user name/password w/o it being a part of the web app.

Is there maybe something that it's trying to access of the o-r.net that is now password protected that wasn't before? THAT's the type of prompt I'm getting. I'm thinking it must be a banner or something, since it's random. FOr the record, I haven't noticed it yet today, and it seemed to only happen on the first few pages I went to AFTER being idle for a while. Not sure if any of that matters or not, just trying to help!

Even the images are redirecting correctly.

IE: http://www.ohio-riders.net/advertisers/banner/dynotune.jpg
redirects to http://www.ohio-riders.com/advertisers/banner/dynotune.jpg automatically.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the page that you're on? Like does it only happen on the main front page? Or does it happen at the forumhome? While viewing a thread? All of the above?

The only outside content in the design of the site is the weather on the front page, the radar GIFs on the radar page, and the Playlist.com playlists on member profiles. Everything else is hosted locally, and called using /... paths so the domain name shouldn't matter.

Casper

Found it. It was the biggrin smilie: :D

It was set to http://www.ohio-riders.net/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. The file permission was 770, read/write/execute for owner (apache) and group (www), but none for guest. Apache apparently handles redirects a bit oddly. Even though the file is owned by apache, the redirect was being viewed as coming from a guest, thus throwing up a file level permission error. No worries, it's fixed now. I scaned the database for any images pointing to the wrong domains. I'm pretty sure I got them all. If anyone sees this again, please take a screenshot. The images being viewed (or not viewed in this case) will help me figure out which one's I've missed. Thanks everyone!

You're going to http://www.ohio-riders.net/showthread.php?t=42229 in that screenshot. Your DNS hasn't replicated down the 301 redirect yet, which is bullshit because that was done a week ago. That link should immediately redirect you to http://www.ohio-riders.com/showthread.php?t=42229 and work fine. Just use www.ohio-riders.com for now.

The redirect is done via a 301 DNS entry. Odd that it would work some times and not others.

I may be mis-reading what you are saying but 301 redirects and DNS redirects are two different things. I have never seen them used together like that. A 301 redirect is a redirect by the webserver, it is not a DNS entry.

That's how it was working for me, except I would just hit esc. and it would load the page just fine, although I dodn't check to make sure all the images were right, just nothing I normally pay attention to was out of place.

It was happenning when reading a thread, replying to a thread, back to the home page, pretty much anywhere. As I said above, just hit esc. and it continued normally. I use the .com to get to the site, and the redirect seems to work fine.

Ok, your DNS looks fubar'd to me. I would think what you are doing is having the web server show the same content for all three domain names. Which means each FQDN should point to the same IP address.

They don't.

That's actually a good point. I'm doing this through GoDaddy's Domain Manager though. They have a section for forwarding domains. You can choose 301 or 302. So I guess the question would be then, how is GoDaddy doing the forwarding/redirecting? It has to be through the DNS, as the hosting isn't on GoDaddy. Now I'm intrigued.

It looks like GoDaddy's "redirecting" just points it to a webserver on their end, then uses an html redirect to point to the right domain. Interesting. I might as well just do that on my end. I've been reading about a lot of people having problems with GoDaddy's redirecting anyways. I just switched over to this last week. I'll go back to all the domains pointing to myserver.

Or have GoDaddy's DNS servers use the same IP address for each www a record in the domain. Assuming your webserver is set up to allow each name.

When you select to forward a domain, it automatically changes the A record. Before using GoDaddy's domain forwarding, I had all domains pointed to 66.102.237.10, and used Apache VHOST to point to the right folders.

That is the way I would do it, every time. Looks like you got all your hosting at Domain Services, at least DNS is there. How the heck did GoDaddy get in the middle here?

No hosting at Domain Services. I don't even know what Domain Services is. My hosting is a virtual-dedicated at NCISP in Raleigh, NC and all of my domains have been purchased via GoDaddy. I have a domain reseller account with them. I always do the VHOST gig, but different articles on SEO suggest using 301 redirects instead. Sounds like a crock of shit to me at this point.

Wow, guess I wasn't the only one!

FYI, I started getting this only last night (Sunday) and again this morning. I was using FF at home and IE6 on my work laptop.
Both times I was trying to access OR using the ohio-riders.net, thats how I have it bookmarked.

I would dismiss the popups each time (I never entered any info into them) and the page would still load correctly.
I kinda thought maybe a hacker planted something within the forum software :dunno:

I've noticed that with the polls, also. One time it's the results, the next it's just as though you haven't voted. I've noticed it with polls that I've voted on, and some that I've not voted on.

That one is not an issue to me though.
